If you’ve been Googling “learn to surf” and every result seems to take you somewhere with 3-metre waves and local surfers who eat beginners for breakfast, take a breath. Famara isn’t like that. And that’s precisely why it might just be the best place in Europe to catch your first wave.

A perfect beach for beginner surfers, with spectacular views of La Graciosa and Lanzarote’s stunning volcanic landscape
Famara stretches for 6 km of soft, golden sand, with no rocks, no reef, and nothing sharp waiting to ruin your day. The beach also has a gentle slope, so you can walk into the water and keep your feet on the ground most of the time. There are no sudden drop-offs and no need to start swimming before you’ve even learned how to stand on a surfboard.
The waves break gently and consistently, which means more time surfing, enjoying yourself and learning, and less time getting tossed around or struggling in the water. Add to that warm Atlantic waters (around 21–24°C depending on the time of year), sunshine and good weather throughout the year. Lanzarote enjoys an eternal spring, giving you pretty much the friendliest learning environment you could ask for: people from all over the world, travelling surfers, families, couples, and a laid-back yet vibrant surf community with its own unique style.
Ask any surf instructor in the Canary Islands where they would send a complete beginner, and Famara will come up again and again. It’s simply an ideal learning beach, making it easy to provide high-quality, professional surf instruction.
Placed at the longest Sand Beach in Lanzarote and one of the longest in the Canary Islands with over 6km
Because you won’t run out of waves
Famara Beach has a unique shape and picks up Atlantic swells from different directions.
We’ve never had to cancel a surf lesson because there weren’t any waves! At Lanzasurf, we check the weather forecast, tides and swell every day and choose the best spots according to the conditions. This means we may head to another beach in Lanzarote on some days to match the needs and ability of each surfer, but you won’t be left without a surf session.
When the waves are small, we love using the time for extra exercises and practice: sitting on the board, improving your paddling technique and much more. The fun and the learning never stop.
There are always good waves to surf, whatever the season. Winter can bring bigger swells for those looking for a little more adventure, while summer tends to bring smaller, friendlier waves, perfect for your first surf lessons. In Famara, you can book a surf camp without having to pray for waves, because they’re here all year round.

Learn here and you’ll be able to surf almost anywhere
Famara offers plenty of variety: different sandbanks, left- and right-breaking waves, and different sections along the beach. This makes it the perfect place to learn how to read waves and develop your surfing skills, preparing you for almost any other surf spot you may visit in the future.
Surfers who learn in Famara often progress quickly because the beach gives you the space to make mistakes safely, get back on your board and try again straight away.
And this one is personal for us, too
We have years of experience in the world of surfing and in Famara. Lanzasurf’s founder, Evandro, spent years exploring beaches across Europe, from southern France and northern Spain to the Basque Country, Galicia, southern Spain, Portugal and all eight Canary Islands, searching for the perfect place to start teaching surf and share his passion for the sport.
After several years of travelling and researching different locations, he arrived at Famara Beach in 2013 and instantly knew it was exactly what he had been looking for all those years.
Here’s something that says it all: half of our instructors learned to surf right here on this very sand. So when we say Famara is the best place to start, we’re not saying it just because it suits our business. Honestly, this is where we would send our own friends and family.

And when the day is over…
Famara isn’t just a beach. It’s a true surf village: laid-back cafés, fresh fish, sandy streets and a community of surfers from all over Europe.
Whether you’re looking for a few surf lessons or a complete surf camp with accommodation included, you’ll find everything within a five-minute walk of the water: board rentals, breakfast and a comfortable bed to come back to after a day of paddling.
If you’re thinking about learning to surf in the Canary Islands, come and find us at Lanzasurf. We’re right on the beach. We’ll take care of the lessons and accommodation. All you have to do is show up and get in the water.
